INFLUENCES SMOKING FAT FATS

Smoking is extremely harmful for people with familial hypercholesterolemia and is strongly advised not to smoke. Smoking causes additional damage to the vessels and lowers the levels of good (HDL) cholesterol. Thus, smoking triples the risk of cardiovascular disease even when blood cholesterol levels are normal.

Individuals with untreated familial hypercholesterolemia have a 25-fold increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease than people without this condition. Even if a patient (male or female) with family hypercholesterolemia smokes, then the risk is 75 times higher.
